The Wire
by Brian Marley
Issue 273, December 2006
Drykkjuvisur Ohljodanna is BJ Nilsen's second collaboration
with Stilluppsteypa, the duo comprised of Sigtryggur Berg Sigmarsson
and Helgi Thorsson. Like the first one, Vikinga Brennivinreleased
in 1005 on Helen Scarsdale, the theme of Drykkjuvisur Ohljodanna
is alcohol and its effects, though any periods of induced euphoria
are tempered by hangovers, blackouts, and the nihilism of those who
would drink themselves to death. The mechanistic rhythms and ice-crystal
drones of the music, reminiscent of the recordings Nilsen has made
under the sobriquet Hazard, are here roughened up and given an even
more ominous slant by Stilluppsteypa, to very good effect.
