Jon Borges has been making noise for a very long time, belying his youthful age in the mid-20s. Yet all of these years of playing tons of gigs in Southern California, producing countless tapes and ceaseless touring with his partner Shannon Kennedy as Pedestrian Deposit has led up to the production of a damn fine electro-acoustic album in East Fork / North Fork. Here, the aggression of noise has been supplanted with the threat of noise, as the two weave an evocative network of electrical hums, controlled feedback tones, scrabbled textures and sweeping cello arcs. Yes, Borges does detonate one hellish explosion of noise, but this only lasts less than a minute before decaying into echoing pools of sound. In the tense interplay between electronics and cello, Borges and Kennedy plumb an emotion depth that recalls the blank stare of horror that Einstürzende Neubauten presented on "Armenia."
This stunning album was one of our favorites for 2010.
